Paragone
December 15, 2020 - March 6, 2021

The Heinzer Reszler Gallery is pleased to announce it will host the third exhibition of Adrien Couvrat titled Paragone I. In this new exhibition, Adrien Couvrat goes further into his research and practice around light and the interaction between canvas and viewer. The technique he developed for the works in the Lyres series serves as a bridge between kinetic art and lyrical abstraction. These works are the result of back-and-forth exchanges between his research into painting and research arising from computer programming. His video installations are intended to make the viewer experience two simultaneous perceptions, sound and colour for example, at the request of only one sense (the principle of synaesthesia). The canvases are arranged according to the artist’s emotional senses and become like transcripts of his daily observations transposed instinctively onto the canvas.

The paintings on paper and canvas that give their name to the exhibition, Paragone, are a first step towards the figure. The word paragone refers to the debate among the artists of the Italian Renaissance concerning whether painting or sculpture was the pre-eminent art form. This title is a nod by the artist to Venetian painting in general and to Titian and Giorgione in particular. The desire to give presence to his canvases led to the development of his own holographic technique that highlights all the ambivalence between painting and sculpture. Due to its sculptural dimension, the viewer is invited to walk around the canvas to see all the facets of this game of metamorphosis. In this new series, the appearance of the figure is the expression of a desire to create as much intimacy as possible with the viewer.

The paintings on paper titled Visage and Statue form part of this same process and also act as preparatory work for the canvases.
